What’s up, guys, Cart Mart here. This is my number one favorite pokemon of all time and I’m so happy to report that it’s finally viable in VGC! This is thanks entirely to its new mega form, which is absolutely essential for making this pokemon work. Base Chimecho is mainly held back by its stats, which aren’t abysmal by any means, but not good enough to enable it to be the slow support it was clearly designed to be. The singular ability levitate giving it an incidental immunity to ground is a big missed opportunity. Other psychic type supports have abilities that enable them to contribute a lot more to battle, meaning Chimecho has long been outshined and outclassed by better pokemon with more specialized roles. Mega Chimecho, on the other hand, is the powerful generalist Chimecho always dreamed of being. It gets the added steel typing, as well as 30 extra defense and special defense and 40 extra special attack. This makes up for its middling 75 HP and allows it to become a serious threat as a special trick room sweeper, especially thanks to the addition of STAB flash cannon (which is a valuable answer to the many powerful fairy and ice type megas). It still only has the ability Levitate, but now that it’s a steel type, it actually benefits from that ability far more than it did before. It basically becomes a much stronger version of Bronzong, with a similarly wide array of supportive moves to choose from. Mega Chimecho’s extra bulk makes it much better at setting up with Calm Mind, which can quickly make it extremely threatening, plus it can restore its own health with Recover, heal its allies with Heal Pulse, set its own trick room, supply some speed control with icy wind, trip people up with Ally Switch, infuriate foes with taunt and encore, even pass Levitate onto another pokemon with Skill Swap or Entrainment. For more niche options, consider Heal bell if you’re worried about a physical attacker getting burned, or gravity + hypnosis for maximum cheese. Chimecho even gets Boomburst now, which is a 140 base power special normal type spread move (that also hits your ally). Basically, this pokemon is cracked now. It has tools for just about any situation and can contribute to just about any team, even if trick room is the most obvious mode to use it in. It isn’t totally necessary. Obviously, its base form being as mediocre as it is still holds it back. You’ll usually be sacrificing much stronger megas if you choose Chimecho, but stronger doesn’t mean better, and Mega Chimecho’s balance of strength, bulk, and supportive versatility make it genuinely one of the best Pokemon I’ve ever used. Take my word with 0 grains of salt, as I am completely unbiased and objective.
