Heatran is fucking goated. It may no longer be the best grass type of all time since the removal of tera types, but it’s still a damn force of nature, man. Flash Fire is an incredible ability and it will make your opponents think twice about launching a fire type attack of any kind into any slot when Heatran could switch in at any moment. But Heatran is not amazing because of its ability, it’s because it’s a fire-steel type (the only one ever) and its 106 defensive stats and 91 HP make it extremely hard to kill without a ground type move (to which it is 4x weak). Also it has 130 Special Attack. Now, 77 Speed is terrible, but the bulk more than makes up for that. Fire-steel resists normal, flying, psychic, and dragon, 4x resists bug, grass, ice, fairy, AND steel, and is immune to poison. I’d say that more than makes up for its 2 weaknesses to water and fighting and its 4x weakness to ground. This pokemon’s moveset is a work of art, too. Any fire type move you can think of, Heatran has it, along with coverage moves like Earth Power, Dragon Pulse, Dark Pulse, and Solar Beam. Its signature move, Magma Storm, is a 100 base power fire type move that traps the opponent and damages them over time, but it is only 75% accurate, which kinda makes it dogshit tbh. Heatran even has a few support options in Taunt and Will-O-Wisp. And if that wasn’t enough, it also gets Iron Defense + Body Press, which could be pretty annoying on a pokemon this hard to kill. I will say, though, it bears repeating just how big a problem ground types are for this pokemon. The only coverage move it has that hits ground for super effective is Solar Beam, which needs sun active to be usable. So just be wary of that. Otherwise, near-perfect pokemon. If it’s not drafted in the 1st round, we are fools. This is like 3rd overall pick material.
