Much like the other gen 4 starters, Torterra is not quite as good as you’d want it to be. It is, however, probably the best of the three. Its ability, shell armor, is only okay, but grass and ground is a pretty good offensive type combo. The two types cover for each other’s weaknesses pretty well, with grass hitting the water types ground is weak to and ground hitting the fire types and poison types that grass may be weak to. However, grass, bug, and flying types pose a pretty big problem for Torterra. That’s to say nothing of its crippling 4x weakness to ice. So what makes this pokemon good? Massive bulk, a solid attack stat, and a pretty usable movepool including Wide Guard, Worry Seed, Wood Hammer, Shell Smash, Headlong Rush, Crunch, and of course, one of the best Earthquakes this side of Garchomp. Basically, it’s just a really good physical attacker, especially in trick room since it has 56 speed. Just be aware of that pesky ice weakness and you have a solid 4th or 5th round pick on your hands. Yache berry is essential.
